Burnout A Leading Cause Of Vacancies In Teaching Positions Says Westmeath Principal

The INTO have declared such vacancies are reaching crisis level.

Higher work loads and teacher burnout is a main cause in vacant teaching positions. 

That's according to Niall Brennan, Principal at Loughegar National School in Westmeath, who says low salaries, too many duties, and difficulties attracting newer graduates is also damaging the profession.  

Principal Brennan says, incentives could prevent Irish teaching graduates from moving abroad to develop their careers: 

Teaching vacancies are reaching crisis levels according to the INTO.

They say 950 teaching positions are currently vacant in schools across the country. 

That number is set more than to double after Christmas, with a further 1,816 vacancies expected by next January. 

While there are currently 28 posts advertised across the midlands that remain unfilled.

There are 10 primary and post-primary jobs available in Laois, seven in Offaly, and 11 in Westmeath.
