Housing commencements nationally have almost doubled in the first seven months of 2024.
Construction began on 99 new homes in the Midlands in July of this year.
Laois led the way in the region, with 49 commencement notices issued in July 2024, according to new figures from the Department of Housing.
That's followed by 27 in Offaly, and 23 in Westmeath.
Around the country, housing commencements have almost doubled in the first seven months of the year compared to 2023.
Minister of State at the Department of Housing Alan Dillon says there are several reasons for the increase:
The figures show, nationally, notices of intention to begin work or convert a building for residential use increased from over 18,500 between January and July last year, to almost 35,400 this year.
It’s a 91% increase and averages out to around 97 commencements every day.
