We shouldn't give up on making the sugar beet sector more profitable.
That's the view of Laois TD Brian Stanley, who believes other products like bioethanol should be extracted from the plant.
The sugar beet industry has it's roots in Laois, with the country's first sugar beet factory based in Mountmellick.
However, the sector died out nationally in 2006 when the EU put sugar quotas in place - these quotas were later scrapped in 2017.
