Calls For Government To Reduce Prison Sentences

It's been revealed overcrowding is leading to an increase in tension between prisoners.

The Irish Penal Reform Trust is calling on the government to reduce prison sentences to help solve the overcrowding crisis in Irish prisons. 
 
It comes as a report released by The Prison Overcrowding Response Group reveals overcrowding is leading to an increase in tension between prisoners.

Yesterday the Midlands Prison was operating at 108 per cent of its capacity while Portlaoise Prison was at 104 per cent.
 
IPRT Executive Director, Saoirse Brady, says there are many possible solutions, all that's needed is action:
