People are being urged not to attempt to clean animals that have been affected by the oil spill in the River Shannon.

The Oil Wildlife Response Network - which has been dealing with the issue since it emerged last Saturday - says attempting to clean the animals is seriously damaging and can be fatal.

Westmeath County Council says it has now treated all contaminated areas and investigating the cause of the spillage.

But wildlife along the riverS Shannon and Al has been significantly impacted by an oil slick.

Training co-ordinator with the response network, Pauline Beades, is grateful to those who are trying to help, but says animals cannot be cleaned, until they recover from the stress of being oiled.
