Credit Unions 'Handcuffed' By Government, According To A Midlands TD

He believes they should be given the opportunity to offer more mortgages.

Credit Unions are being handcuffed by government lending limits, according to a midlands TD.

Sinn Fein's Brian Stanley says it's important institutions are given the opportunity to step up to play a "major role" to offer more mortgages to help alleviate the housing crisis. 

The Laois Offaly TD criticised legislation that allows Credit Unions to provide just 3 percent of the country's total mortgages. 

He believes the playing field between banks and other lending institutions isn't level in Ireland:
