Fall In Drug And Weapon Offences In Offaly This Year

The total number of offences for the second quarter of this year stands at  45, down from 66.

Drugs and weapons offences in Offaly are on the decline.

Figures revelaed by Superintendent Eamonn Curley at the recent Offaly Joint Policing Committee Meeting, show the total number of drug and weapon related offences for the second quarter of this year stands at  45, down from 66 for the same period last year.

There were 29 instances of drug possession, down from 40 last year, while there were 5 possession of drugs for sale or supply offences, which is a reduction of 11.

There were no offences relating to the manufacture of drugs in Offaly in the second quarter of this year.

There were 10 instances of offensive weapon possession, an increase of 2 on last years figures.

Speaking after providing the figures, Superintendent Curley says 'Drugs are a societal problem. Policing is just a cog in the wheel, education is another. If the demand for drugs wasn't there, sale or supply wouldn't be a problem. But the demand is there.'

Independent Councillor Sean O'Brien welcomed the drop in drug offences for this year, but says he's well aware that the use of drugs in 'towns, streets and estates is certainly trending upwards.'
