Fianna Fail-Fine Gael Voting Pact Broken In Laois Municipal District Meeting

It did stay intact for one of the top two positions.

There's been a dramatic turn of events in Laois, as an independent councillor has been elected vice-chair of Graiguecullen-Portarlington Municipal District.

A voting pact between Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael saw Pádraig Fleming elected as cathaoirleach for the year ahead.

Fine Gael's Aisling Moran was due to take up the role of vice-chair - however, she declined and nominated independent rep Ben Brennan instead.

She says councillors shouldn't be excluded from these roles based on party politics:


Meanwhile, Fine Gael's Mary Sweeney has been elected chair of the Portlaoise Municipal District, with Fianna Fáil's John Joe Fennelly voted in as Deputy.
