It’s understood he passed away suddenly.
Roscommon Fine Gael Councillor, John Naughten, is due to be laid to rest this week.
The Athlone man passed away suddenly on Friday.
His funeral mass is due to take place in St. Brigid’s Church in Drum on Thursday at 11am.
Mr. Naughten, who is the brother of Independent TD, Denis Naughten, was due to stand for Fine Gael in the General Election in the Roscommon Galway constituency.
Taoiseach, Simon Harris, says he was a decent, gentle, and hard working man, who was loved by all in the party.
Roscommon County Council Cathaoirleach, Paschal Fitzmaurice, says he’s completely shocked and saddened by the news.
The Monksland Town Team says Mr. Naughten was a true gentleman, who always had a smile on his face.
Books of condolence are open for the public to extend their sympathies from 9:30am - 5pm daily in both Roscommon council's, Athlone area office in Monksland and in the council buildings in Roscommon.
