Evan Fitzgerald died after shooting himself outside Carlow’s Fair Green Shopping Centre in June 2025, at a time when he and two friends were facing charges relating to the possession of firearms following a sting operation by An Garda Síochána.
He was described in the Dail as "a vulnerable young man", and concerns were expressed that the Garda sting operation was inappropriate in the circumstances.
