Withdrawal Of Soldiers From Portlaoise Prison Proof Of "Successful Peace Process"

Soldiers were stationed at the prison in the 1970s.

A former Justice Minister claims Gardaí will be able to handle security, after Irish soliders were withdrawn from Portlaoise Prison.

Members of the Defence Forces left their stations at the institution this week, after more than 50 years in Laois.

They were originally stationed there due to the presence of paramilitaries and terrorists from the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

Fine Gael Laois Offaly TD, Charlie Flanagan, says it's proof the peace process has done its job:

Justice Minister, Helen McEntee, obtained Government approval for the plan near the end of July.
