Justice Minister Acknowledges Potential For Mistakes Around Concurrent Sentencing

Joe Drennan's killer received a concurrent sentence after his car hit and killed the Laois student.

The Justice Minister says judges sometimes make mistakes when it comes to concurrent sentencing.

The issue caused controversy with the case of Laois student Joe Drennan, who was killed in a hit and run incident in Limerick two years ago.

His killer received six and a half years in prison for an unrelated incident with a firearm - and will serve no extra jail time for the death of the Mountrath man, as the two sentences will run concurrently.

Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan said he wouldn't make a direct comment on that specific case:
