Plans to turn the RTÉ Radio Marconi Transmitter in the midlands into a heritage museum were turned down by the State broadcaster, due to a lack of funding.
That's according to a Former Midlands Correspondent with RTÉ, who was heavily involved with the 'Marconi Project,' the site of which is in Moydrum, Athlone.
The Marconi Transmitter was switched on by Eamon Dé Valera in the 1930s, and a visitor centre based on the site would have been expected to bring in between 50 and 100 thousand people per year.
