The town's river will be a key part of the project.
€10,000 in funding is being granted to a midlands town for a unique architectural project.
Mountrath was one of three towns selected for the Irish Architecture Foundation's Reimagine Hometown Architect initiative.
The aim of the development is to connect the town centre with the Whitehorse River to help revitalise the area.
There will also be a focus on the history of Mountrath and the river, as an industrial area in linen and cotton weaving.
