2024 Laois Local Elections Day One

Live coverage from the Portlaoise count centre.

The first day of counting in the Local Elections in Laois resulted in no first count being announced.

The process is due to get underway once again at 11am tomorrow morning.

Tallies have reflected the Green Party won't take a seat on Laois County Council in this year's Local Elections.

Party Candidate in Portlaoise, Rosie Palmer, says the tally count didn't reflect what she heard on the doors:

Ben Brennan stormed ahead in Graiguecullen/Portarlington, according to the tallies, and is trailed by Fianna Fáil’s Padraig Fleming and Paschal McEvoy, and Sinn Féin’s Aidan Mullins.

Aisling Moran is also going strong, under an Independent banner.

Tallies show Sinn Féin’s Aaron Kelly trailing Fine Gael’s PJ Kelly for the last seat in the Graiguecullen/Portarlington area.

Laois Offaly Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley says it's looking like his party won't gain an additional seat in Laois:

Fine Gael’s Conor Bergin is leading the charge in Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick, and is followed by Fianna Fáil’s Paddy Bracken, and Independents Ollie Clooney and James Kelly.

John King and Paddy Buggy are doing well under the Fine Gael banner, but are trailed closely by Fianna Fáil’s Seamus McDonald.

In Portlaoise, tallies show Willie Aird of Fine Gael storming ahead.

Sinn Féin’s Caroline Dwane Stanley, Fianna Fáil’s Catherine Fitzgerald and John Joe Fennelly are poised to retain their seat, while Independent Tommy Mulligan could be set to claim a spot.

Barry Walsh could also retain his seat.

However, it’ll be a close contest for the final seat in Portlaoise, with tallies showing Fianna Fáil’s Naeem Iqbal, Labour’s Marie Touhy and Fine Gael’s Thomasina Connell vying for the final spot.

Independent Candidate in the Portlaoise area, Bolaji Adeyanju, says he's anxious for things to get started:
