Mental Health Charity Wants Social Media Giants Support For New Catfishing Law

The practice of impersonating someone else while causing harm may be outlawed soon.

A mental health charity is offering their qualified approval of the arrival of a bill aimed at tackling catfishing.

Senator Fiona O'Loughlin along with former Senator Lisa Chambers are bringing forward proposed legislation that would criminalise the online practice.

Under the proposed law, an individual who impersonates another person to cause harm could face years in prison.

However Tullamore's Fiona O'Malley, CEO of Turn2Me believes social media companies will have to be do their part if the law is to work.

Currently, expensive court orders are required to unveil people behind profiles.

She says she hopes the bill can be amended and strengthened:
