It's part of a campaign to raise awareness of blood clots and how to spot them.
Mullingar Regional Hospital has lit up red and blue for World Thrombosis Day.
The awareness day was created by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis in 2014 to highlight the frequently disregarded and misunderstood condition of thrombosis.
Globally, thrombosis-related disorders cause one in every four deaths.
More than 2,000 partners in 100+ countries participated in World Thrombosis Day, including Mullingar Regional Hospital.
As part of the celebrations, the second annual Thrombosis Ireland VTE Exemplar Awards were held on Friday 7th October.
Employees at Mullingar Hospital were big winners on the night as the VTE Champion Award 2022 was awarded to Dearbhla O’Sullivan, Chief Pharmacist, and Claire Browne, Senior Pharmacist, for their innovative patient safety card.
Their award is a recognition of the work done in Mullingar Hospital to promote excellence in Thrombosis care, data, audit, prevention, and awareness.
This work has already saved lives.
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a condition in which a blood clot forms most often in the deep veins of the leg, groin or arm (deep vein thrombosis) and travels in the circulation, lodging in the lungs (pulmonary embolism). Together, DVT and PE are known as VTE - a dangerous, potentially deadly medical condition.
