A red alert has been issued for Galway and Cork.

The midlands looks likely to escape the worst of the heavy rain coming from Storm Bert over the weekend.

The weather system is set to hit the country later tonight, bringing in a yellow rainfall warning nationwide from 10pm this evening until noon tomorrow.

A red weather alert for high levels of rain has been issued for Galway and Cork from midnight until 10am tomorrow morning

Met Éireann are warning of possible flooding, travel disruption and fallen trees.
