The system for providing emergency homeless accommodation is at crisis point, with almost all of the state's beds full.
That was the update given to ministers at cabinet earlier this week with 19 local authorities, including Laois, Offaly and Westmeath, at full capacity.
There were 190 homeless adults and children in emergency accommodation across the midlands in August of this year, a jaw-dropping 102% increase on 2021. We have never seen such a demand on our services and our emergency beds are full 365 nights a year.

It's led to people looking for emergency accommodation in Dublin being sent to surrounding counties.
