Fine Gael MEP for Midlands North-West Colm Markey believes other road safety issues should tackled.
Proposals for mandatory medical exams for new drivers and those renewing their licence has been described as "ridiculous" by a midlands MEP.
Drivers over 70 would have to undergo medical tests in order to keep their driving licence valid under the proposals.
At the moment, there is a system of self-declaration by drivers if there is any issue regarding their ability to stay on the road.
