There are 58 seats available on the region's County Councils.
Voters in the midlands are heading to the polls today.
132 candidates around the region are vying for one of 58 seats.
Westmeath is fielding the largest number of candidates in the midlands in this year's Local Elections, with 48 people seeking one of the 20 seats available.
They'll be running in one of four electoral areas, in Athlone, Moate, Mullingar and Kinnegad.
47 candidates are competing for a seat on Laois County Council, where there are 19 positions available.
Those seats are divided among the three electoral areas of Portlaoise, Borris in Ossory/ Mountmellick, and Graiguecullen/Portarlington.
Edenderry, Birr and Tullamore make up the electoral areas of Offaly County Council, where there are also 19 seats available.
37 candidates will be vying for one of those positions.
Meanwhile in the European elections, 27 candidates will be vying for five seats in the Midlands North West Constituency.
Polling stations open at 7am, and will remain open until 10pm.
You need to bring some sort of ID to the polling station and your polling card if you have it - but it’s not essential.
