Longford Westmeath TD Robert Troy wants to see existing buildings in Columb Barracks used instead.
45 new modular buildings will be constructed in Westmeath for International Protection Applicants.
Tented accommodation currently in place at Columb Barracks in Mullingar is due to be removed.
The new modular site will be able to accommodate 320 people and is expected to be erected in the coming months.
