No Impact On Westmeath County Council's Finances After €515k Payment Fraud, Says CEO

The incident occurred in January of this year.

There's been no impact on Westmeath County Council's finances following a payment fraud of €515,000.

The local authority was the subject of a third-party payment fraud in January of this year.

Chief Executive Barry Kehoe provided the first update on the incident since February, at yesterday's monthly meeting of Westmeath County Council.

He informed members of the local authority the matter was immediately reported to Gardaí upon its discovery, and its insurers were contacted.

The Council made a successful claim against its cybercrime insurance policy, and agreed on a 'modest burden share' with the affected contractor.

Mr. Kehoe confirmed the insurer has covered the Council's loss in full, meaning there is no impact on its finances.

He also says a revised series of procedures have been put in place to avoid such an incident occurring again.

Mr. Kehoe advised members a Garda investigation into the matter is ongoing, so he couldn't provide further information at this time.
