Irish Rail say track maintenance requirements are one of the current obstacles.
The campaign for a later train service in Offaly is set to continue, despite a new addition from Irish Rail.
The company yesterday introduced a new timetable, which includes an 8.30pm service from Heuston, which arrives in Tullamore just after 9.30pm in the evening.
However, it ruled out an even later service, despite calls from commuters in the town, due to what is describes as 'limited track maintenance time.'
