ESB crews are working to restore electricity.

Over 10,000 homes and businesses in the midlands are without power this morning after Storm Ellen swept through the country last night.

The worst hit areas are Athlone, with over 3,600 customers affected by faults, Tullamore with 2,500, and Delvin with over 1,000 without electricity.

The ESB estimates power to be restored to all areas between 2 o'clock this afternoon and 9 o'clock tonight.

There are also reports of fallen trees and debris on roads in the following areas:

- Tree down on the Munny Road between Kinnitty and Kilcormac, just after the pass cross reports.

- Tree blocking the Ballycumber to Moate road.

- Tree blocking Rosemount road at Gillivan's house.

- Traffic lights out in Geashill.

- Tree down at Lough Boora Parklands road, near entrance gate.

- Branches between Ballinacarrigy and Kilbeggan.

- Branches down between Clonalsee and Cadamstown.

A yellow wind warning remains in place in Leinster and six counties in the northern half of the country until 8 o'clock this morning.

A status red wind warning for Cork and a status orange warning for  Munster Galway and Mayo has now been lifted.

In Cork, where the weather was most severe, there's severe flooding, particularly  in the Skibbereen and Bandon areas.

The clean up process is already underway with emergency crews  attempting to clear any fallen trees and debris.

While ESB Networks have been working through the night to restore power and are dispatching additional manpower this morning.

Cathal Nolan, from Ireland's Weather Channel, says it's the worst weather since Storm Ophelia, which claimed three lives in 2017.
