Over 80% Rise In Numbers Seeking International Protection

Those figures come from the first six months of this year.

The number of people seeking international protection in Ireland in the first six months of this year has risen by 87%.

Figures released by the Department of Justice show that up until July 7th 11,052 people applied for asylum here.

This represents a rise of 5,133, when compared to the same period of time last year when 5,919 applications were made by July 9th 2023.

Aontú leader and Meathwest TD Peadar Tobín says the number of asylum seekers arriving here currently is “totally unsustainable:
