Around 50 People Attend Protest In Westmeath

A former nuring home in Athlone has been contracted by the state to house asylum seekers for one year.

Around 50 people have attended a protest in the midlands this evening.

It's taking place outside the Stella Maris nursing home in Baylough, Athlone after the Department of Integration confirmed the site would be used to house up to 60 asylum seekers.

The facility, which originally closed in August 2022, has a one-year contract with the State. 

Westmeath Councillor, Paul Hogan says when communities are not consulted with, it can feel like people making decisions behind closed doors:
