"Phone Down - Safe Driving" Midlands Pupil Launch Road Safety Campaign

The Garda Commissioner attended the launch in an Offaly school today.

Put the phone down while driving is the message from midlands primary school students. 

Pupils from Scoil Mhuire, Tullamore, have teamed up with the local rotary club to highlight the danger of distraction driving. 

35 people have lost their lives on Irish roads so far this year. 

Orthopedic Surgeon at Midlands Regional Hospital Tullamore, Eoin Sheehan says the only screen you should be looking at his the windscreen:

There’s plenty of noise at the Tullamore school today, as all kinds of emergency vehicles are on show for the children to have a look at.

Almost a fifth of motorists admitted to writing messages or emails often or very often, according to research by the RSA.


Stephen Coyle from Offaly Fire Service says they’re trying to teach the importance of road safety as early as possible:



While admitting the only way to detect people using their phone while driving is through observation, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris says it’s something they’re keen to crack down on:
