Report Highlights Disability Obstacles In Midlands County

Footpaths and car parking spaces have been identified as problem areas.

Lack of ramps, obstacles on footpaths and staff not understanding their needs are some of the biggest issues faced by people with disabilities in Offaly.

The Offaly Disability Equality Network's Report and Action Plan recommends three changes to improve quality of life for disabled people in the county.

People who took part in the ODEN report have suggested repairing footpaths and clearly marking disabled parking bays to improve accessibility in Offaly.

They also say they're 'Nervous going into shops,' because staff don't understand their needs.

Nearly two thirds of participants have highlighted the need for accessible buses and bus stops to tackle the transport issues for people with disabilities.

In terms of healthcare, access to GPs and therapy are the main priorities for those who took part.

The report recommends improving accessibility options, raising awareness of the issues faced by people with disabilities and developing local services such as housing, transport and healthcare.

The report also states ODEN will be working with a number of organisations, including Offaly County Council and Tullamore Chamber, to improve the quality of life for disabled people.
