Shortage Of Priests Could Lead To Funerals Taking Place Weeks After A Death

Shortages are being felt nationwide.

A shortage of priests means we may become like the UK where funerals are held weeks and not days after a person dies. 

The Bishop of Galway and Clonfert, a diocese with 40 parishes, is predicting it will have only 20 priests within the next decade. 

Bishop Michael Duignan is warning Ireland may soon become like the UK, where funerals take weeks to arrange because of the shortage of priests to conduct the service. 

Fr. Paddy Byrne says the shortages are being felt right across the country, something which puts pressure on older and retired clergy:

The Abbeyleix priest says his colleagues across Ireland are "dying on their feet".

He also says services can't be guaranteed into the future:

He believes Irish Bishops should have listened to women who wanted to be ordained.
