Irish Rural Link is voicing concern over a lack of action being taken.
The State's ability to pay out pensions could come under threat in as little as 20 years, according to Irish Rural Link.
It comes as the Department of Social Protection are bringing changes to allow people to work past the traditional retirement age to receive a higher rate of payment up to the age of 70.
However Irish Rural Link say that more will need to be done to avert the worst consequences of an ageing population.
