Young swans can often confuse tarmacadam for the surface of water.
A swan has been rescued in Westmeath after mistaking a road for a lake.
Sarah Mason, a volunteer with Westmeath SPCA, says young swans can often confuse tarmacadam for surface water.
The startled bird was found on the N4 near Mullingar yesterday and, with the help of the gardaí and a lorry driver, was caught and returned to the lake at Ladestown.
Ms. Mason says young swans are being pushed out of their nests by their parents this time of year:
A rescue mission was launched on the N4 today, when a rouge Swan was spotted wandering on the road. Assisting the Westmeath Spca the Swan was captured and returned to the lake at Ladestown
