Trial Over €8.4m Midlands Cocaine Seizure Delayed Over Additional Evidence

Gardaí seized 120kg of cocaine in Westmeath in the summer of 2022.

The trial of a pilot charged over a seizure of €8.4m of cocaine flown into the midlands in 2022, has been delayed due to the disclosure of additional evidence.

43 year old Michal Luczak, a Polish man formerly with an address at Primrose Avenue, Jigginstown, Naas, in Kildare, and now living in Skerries, Dublin, is charged with possessing drugs worth more than €13,000 at the Abbeyshrule Aerodrome, on August 4, 2022.

Garda National Drugs & Organised Crime Bureau officers, supported by other units, monitored a Cessna single-engine aircraft landing at Abbeyshrule Aerodrome, Longford, shortly after 6 o'clock on August 4th, of 2022.

Later that evening, they intercepted two vehicles in the Lough Owel area in Westmeath, recovering 120kg of cocaine from one car.

Michal Luczak, a Polish man formerly with an address in Kildare, and now living in Skerries, Dublin, is charged with possessing drugs worth more than €13,000.

The father of two, who is on bail, has already indicated he pleads not guilty.

He appeared before Judge Keenan Johnson at Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court yesterday when a jury was scheduled to be sworn in for his trial.

However, prosecutor Cathal Ó Braonáin told Judge Johnson that it was not in a position to proceed because significant disclosure of additional evidence would be served on the accused man's lawyers.

John Shortt, Solicitor for Mr Luczak, told the court the defence did not know how much additional evidence would be served.

He added that they would require time to go through it and take instructions.

Judge Johnson adjourned the case until on April 11th.
