Westmeath Senators To Learn Re-Election Fate After Golfgate

A number of politicians involved in Golfgate four years ago have been appointed Junior Ministers.

A  number of politicians who found themselves at the centre of the Golfgate scandal have been appointed as Junior Ministers. 

Micheál Martin has offered clemency to those involved in one of the biggest political scandals of the pandemic. 

Noel Grealish, who was the captain of the Oireachtas Golf Society, now sits at Cabinet as a super junior minister - having had charges brought against him in court thrown out.

Dara Calleary resigned in the wake of the dinner having spent just a month as Agriculture Minister. 

He's the new Minister for Social Protection. 

While Senators Jerry Buttimer and John Cummins - who also attended the golfgate dinner - were yesterday appointed as Junior Ministers. 

Former Attorney General Seamus Woulfe weathered the storm and remains a Supreme Court Judge.

While other Senators attending - Kilbeggan's Paul Daly, Mullingar's Aidan Davitt and Niall Blaney will learn their fate in the coming days as they seek re-election to the Seanad. 

Indeed the only political career the scandal ended was that of former EU Commissioner Phil Hogan, who nonetheless was brought back into Fine Gael's good graces by Simon Harris to help in the election effort.
