It's understood she did not know the attacker.
The woman killed in an attack in Tullamore yesterday has been named locally.
Ashling Murphy, a primary school teacher aged in her early 20s, was attacked while jogging along the banks of the Grand Canal.
A garda investigation into the fatal assault continues this morning.
The incident occurred along The Grand Canal Way between Tullamore town and Digby bridge near Cappincur around 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
Two people walking along the canal attempted to disturb an attack.

The victim's body remained at the scene until 9 o'clock last night so that a technical examination could take place.
A man in his 40s remains in the custody at Tullamore Garda Station.
Gardaí believe Ashling did not know her attacker and are appealing for anyone who was in the area - which is popular location for walkers - at the time to come forward.
