Ours To Protect - Week 12
Irish Bogs
Bogs are unique ecosystems that play a crucial role in supporting biodiversity, carbon storage, and water regulation. In Ireland, bogs are particularly significant, covering approximately 17% of the land area. Two key aspects of bog management in Ireland are cutaway bogs and restoration efforts. Cutaway bogs involve the removal of peat for fuel or horticultural purposes, while restoration initiatives aim to rehabilitate degraded bogs to their natural state. This factsheet provides an overview of cutaway and restoration bogs in Ireland.
