Late Double Saves Point For Athlone

Despite taking the lead early, Athlone were fortunate to escape their meeting with Kerry with a point.

Athlone Town had to settle for a share of the spoils after a six goal thriller in the League of Ireland First Division on Friday evening.

The midlanders were trailing Kerry FC by 3-1 heading into the last five minutes of the game and needed two late goals to avoid defeat.

The first of those two came in the 85th minute courtesy of a Brian Torre volley off the crossbar which the referee had deemed to have crossed the line.

Two minutes later Town were level again after Dylan Hand turned in a corner to make it 3-3.

Dario Castelo's side took the lead through a fortuitous Leo Gaxha goal, before going behind to goals from Oran Crowe, Andy Spain, and Ryan Kelliher.

That result leaves Athlone in second in the standings, 12 points ahead of the first team outside the promotion play-off positions.

They return to action this Friday evening against the runaway league leaders, Cork City.
