Maher Quits Laois Hurling

The announcement came from Laois GAA late last night.

Willie Maher has announced his departure from his role as Laois' senior hurling manager with immediate effect.

The Tipperary man took over in 2022 and endured a difficult first season with relegation from Division One followed by a failure to reach the Joe McDonagh Cup final.

This year proved far more successful.

Maher led the O'Moore County back to Division One, and missed out on winning the Joe McDonagh by a single goal in a thrilling final.

His last game over the county's hurlers was a respectable performance in defeat to Wexford in the All Ireland preliminary quarter finals.

The former Tipparery under 21 boss has singled out his players, their families, the coaching staff and the Laois fans for thanks upon his departure.

The county board's chairperson PJ Kelly meanwhile says "We sincerely thank Willie Maher and his entire backroom team for their hard work and dedication."
