It's expected he'll be ratified officially on Monday.
Tommy Fitzgerald is set to take over the senior Laois hurlers.
The announcement from Laois GAA comes off the back of the news that Darren Gleeson has had to step down from the role after receiving a cancer diagnosis.
Fitzgerald had most recently been over the Portlaoise hurlers, competing relatively well after returning to the senior grade this year.
The club is paying tribute to his work at the club:
Portlaoise GAA would like to express our deepest gratitude to Tommy Fitzgerald for his phenomenal work and dedication over the past few years, especially with our senior hurlers.
He is an integral part of our club, contributing immensely at both senior and underage levels - he commands huge respect within the club for his professionalism, values, dedication, talent, and humility.
As Tommy steps into his new role as Laois Senior Hurling Manager, we know he will bring the same determination, leadership, and vision to the county team. While we will certainly miss his presence on our sidelines, we are immensely proud to see him take on this exciting challenge.
He was a selector under Eddie Brennan when Laois won the Joe McDonagh Cup in 2019, and was part St Thomas' All-Ireland winning management team last year.
Niall Corcoran has been appointed as coach and the rest of his backroom team will be confirmed in the coming days.
Midlands 103 commentator Jack Nolan says he thinks it's the right call:
It's expected Fitzgerald will be ratified officially at a county board meeting on Monday.
