The opening ceremony takes place in Paris tonight.

The 17th edition of the Summer Paralympic Games officially gets underway in Paris this evening.

Athletes from 168 countries will parade down the Champs-Élysées (Elee-zay) to Place (plas) de la Concorde.

35 athletes, including Tullamore Josephine Healion and Portarlington's Nicole Turner, make up the Team Ireland contingent hoping to improve on the seven-medal haul from Tokyo three years ago.

Turner will be competing in her third Paralmpics, having made her debut at the age of 14 in Rio.

She won a silver medal in the Butterfly S6 Final in Tokyo - she begins her competition in the pool with the S6 50m Freestyle tomorrow morning.

Healion is competing at her first games and will be taking on tandem cycling on both the road and track.

The Tullamore racer starts with the Women’s B 1000m Time Trial qualifying on Friday afternoon.
