A second championship defeat to seven days has left The Lake County's side's hopes hanging by a thread.
Westmeath's hurlers no longer have their championship fate in their hands after their defeat to Offaly yesterday.
The Lake County came out the wrong end of a 2-23 to 1-20 loss in Tullamore after a dramatic contest that saw two red cards, a black card, and two penalties.
While Westmeath battled throughout the contest, they suffered for the loss of Daragh Egerton to two yellow cards, and conceded one of the two penalties given against them.
With games against Down, Meath, and Laois remaining, Joe Fortune's side will have to win those three and hope Laois or Offaly suffer another loss along the way.
