Tuesday, 31 October 2023 - 6 minutes
The jury in the Ashling Murphy murder trial has heard details of Jozef Puska’s arrest after leaving hospital.
33-year-old Mr. Puska, of Lynally Grove, Mucklagh, Offaly, denies murdering Ashling Murphy on the 12th of January 2022. Detective Sgt David Scahill told the jury he arrested Mr. Puska after he was discharged from St James’ Hospital on the morning of the 18th of January 2022.
He said Mr. Puska was brought to Tullamore Garda Station to be questioned, and was officially charged 42 minutes past 7 the following evening – January 19th.
Under cross examination, defence barrister Michael Bowman asked if Det. Sgt. Scahill noticed a crowd outside the front of Tullamore Garda Station.
He said he couldn’t recall as he came through the back entrance of the station.
Earlier, the court heard a DNA profile found from under Ashling Murphy’s fingernails matched those from samples taken from Mr. Puska.
Dr Lorna Flanagan said there was a 1 in 14,000 chance that DNA profile belonged to someone unrelated to the accused.
Frank Greaney has been in court for Midlands 103 and has been speaking with Aidan Barry on the Midlands Today Show.
